ART DECO DINING CHAIRS & LARGE DINING TABLE BY HANS HARTL FROM VEB DEUTSCHE WERKSTÄTTEN HELLERAU, 1920S, SET OF 7 .
It is worth highlighting the exceptionally rare figured veneer pattern of the tabletop. Such a striking and elaborate veneer pattern is extremely rare to find in furniture from this period and makes this table a true rarity. The lively grain and decorative veneer lend the large tabletop, with its three extensions from 141 cm to 276 cm, an exceptional sense of depth and elegance. Model 562 is of very high quality construction, the table legs, as well as the armrests and legs of the chairs, are made of solid wood. The exceptional figured veneer pattern can be found both on the tabletop and on the chair backs. Designed by Prof. Hans Hartl and manufactured by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau in Germany in the 1920s.
Prof. Hans Hartl occupies an interesting position in the development of German furniture design, situated between Art Deco, traditional craftsmanship and the emerging modernist approach. Particularly interesting is the connection to the design principles of Bruno Paul, Henry van de Velde, Bernhard Pankok, Hermann Obrist and Richard Riemerschmid, as well as to the Deutscher Werkbund, the Berlin School of Arts and Crafts and the Munich Workshops for Art in Craftsmanship. Bruno Paul was one of the important German architects, designers and artists of his time. His designs are characterized by clear proportions, an architectural formal language, precise lines and a consistent connection between function and design. This approach can also be found in the context of Deutsche Werkstätten. The furniture of this period combines an increasingly reduced, architectural formal language with the use of high quality materials and exceptionally careful craftsmanship.
The present ensemble by Hans Hartl impressively illustrates this development. The clearly structured horizontal and vertical lines meet a strong, almost sculptural construction. At the same time, the high quality woods and the exceptional veneer pattern create a warm and distinguished appearance. The piece has been professionally cleaned and the surfaces carefully refinished, while preserving its original appearance, original substance and authentic character.
